Sonali Patel and Hattie McKinney, 2012 Youth Governors

Congratulations to Sonali Patel on being elected to 2012 youth governor for the March 14-18 spring conference. Sonali represents the Clarenceville Delegation.

Sonali is heavily involved in many activities, including: President of my Student Congress, Vice President of Diversity Club, and a member of NHS. I am also a part of SADD, BPA, Peer Mentors, the school’s Marching band, Athlete Elite Program and School Improvement Committee. Detroit Police Department’s National Night Out, the Southeast United Way, the Brother and Sister Club of America, and Angel’s Place Youth Council. I also serve as committee chair for Relay for Life.

“It will be my top priority to represent everyone and put my beliefs and thoughts second to all of you. I have been a part of MYIG for three years and from those years of experience I know that together we can better our conference and state. I want to make sure every voice is heard and accomplish many things by compromising to pass the best legislation possible. I know we can make this the most successful and enjoyable conference that MYIG has ever seen."

Hattie is involved in many activities which include: Michigan Youth In Government, Conference on National Affairs, Poverty Awareness Organization, African-American Awareness Association, Cabinet, Yearbook Committee, Michigan Corps, Cranbrook Kingswood Brown/Indian Club, Diversity Club, Community Service at Cranbrook Kingswood (Student Leader), World Affairs Presenter, Track & Field, Softball, Powder Puff, 140 Characters Conference Panel Member. McKinney Foundation, Summer in the City, Light House Path, Sustainable Horizons (Costa Rica), Dance (Teacher’s Aide).

“As Governor I know I will make a positive impact on the conference. I, by nature, am a caring, compassionate, charismatic person, as well as a strong leader. My philosophy is ‘the Governor is elected by the people, therefore the Governor must represent the people’. As Governor I will listen to everyone’s comments and concerns regarding the many elements and aspects of the conference, then use that information to work alongside the Youth In Government Staff to make changes.

I will pass bills that will change Michigan for the better and rule in favor of everyone. Youth In Government is one of few organizations where the youth have the power to directly revolutionize the Michigan government. I want to make sure that each and everyone’s voice is heard and that the outcome of the 2012 Michigan Youth in Government conference is spectacular.”
