Fall conference

   Prospective delegates/schools to the State Youth In Government conference are expected attend a fall conference. A $20 fee will be charged to each student which will be part of the total yearly fee (Students/schools not attending the fall conference will still pay the $20 fee which will be added to the total yearly fee).
   Schools attending fall conference will have first choice of which State conference they will attend. Schools that do not attend a fall conference may request a conference but shall understand that the YIG office will place them in the conference that has space available.
   This one-day training program is to prepare and inform students and advisors about the Lansing experience. The day includes workshops in all program areas, campaigns, election of state officers and governor candidates.
 

Nomination and Election of Officers

Each school group or YMCA Club participating in Youth in Government may submit one nomination for each elected position, provided the candidate meets the qualifications for the office for which he or she is running.

Candidates may be nominated for any office by filling out the candidate application form and sending it to the state office one week prior to fall conference. 

Governor Candidates

Each district will elect two candidates for Governor (one for each spring conference). Each candidate will campaign during the Lansing conference.  Elections will be held on the final day of the conference. The governors will serve for the following school year.

Each candidate will have 3-5 minutes to present the highlights of his/her legislative program for the state.

Each candidate should be introduced with a 1-1/2 minute nominating speech. 

Qualifications

  • Must have served at least one year in the legislative branch of Michigan Youth in Government.
  • Must be a junior in high school
  • Knowledge of parliamentary procedure
  • Personality, good citizenship, dress, poise
  • A knowledge of state issues, and possible solutions of state problems
  • Ability to speak in public extemporaneously
  • Must be able to participate in yearly YIG functions, as stated in the program handbook. Also must participate in CONA and the Washington D.C. Youth Governor's conference.

Lt. Governor & Speaker of the House:

Will preside over a discussion using parliamentary procedure. The candidate will call the meeting to order and make an opening statement telling how he/she plans to preside over the Senate or House if elected.

Each candidate will face the same parliamentary procedure skit. Candidates will be outside the room until they are called to preside.

Each candidate should be introduced with a 1-1/2 minute nominating speech.

Qualifications for Red/Green (11th and 12 graders or veteran 10th graders)

  • At least a sophomore in high school
  • Thorough knowledge of parliamentary procedure
  • Ability to speak in public extemporaneously
  • Recognized leadership
  • Personality, good citizenship, good appearance, dress, poise
  • Must have served at least one year in the legislative branch of Michigan Youth in Government

Qualifications for Blue/White (9 graders or 1st year 10th graders)

  • Must be in 9th grade or a 1st year 10th grader
  • Knowledge of parliamentary procedure
  • Recognized leadership-- having demonstrated at home, church or school
  • Personality, good citizenship, good appearance, dress, poise
